Coir logs are light-weight natural tubes filled with densely packed coconut fibre, wrapped in coir netting. These rolls are 100% biodegradable and can easily blend in with the environment, while being flexible enough to curve around existing vegetation and the contours of hillsides and riverbanks.
Coir logs are designed to provide a natural erosion solution for restoration projects along steep hillsides and riverbanks, but they also help to restore riparian and aquatic ecosystems and regenerate habitats. They stabilise the soil, help to establish vegetation, alter stream flow velocities, capture sediments, shape channels, stabilise shorelines and generally prevent the ravages of erosion taking hold. They can even be used in streams and rivers to protect plants and soil by redirecting the force of water away from the area.
Coir logs can be used in a large variety of locations where erosion, increased runoff or severe sediment loss occurs. For example, they are ideal for revegetation projects where you want to prevent runoff washing away sediment and plant debris, instead allowing a healthy soil and mulch to develop. Coir logs are also suitable along river banks and streams because they stabilise the banks and reduce the erosive action of waves. Open drains can also be protected from an accumulation of sediments and slow water runoff, and they are ideal along steep hillsides or slopes, even gullies, where silt fence installations are not suitable. In fact, any environmentally sensitive area can be protected with these biodegradable coir fibre logs.
Since they are 100% biodegradable, they won’t last forever and will need to be replaced if the erosion situation continues to exist. Usually however, coir fibre logs can last for two to three years, which allows enough time for plants to become established and the land to stabilise.
Installing coir fibre logs is very easy, because all you need to do is dig a channel or trench, place the logs in the trench, backfill to keep them tight against the slope and then stake them into position with pegs. Adjacent logs can be secured with coir twine and you can join multiple logs in a long line using coir twine as well (making sure that there are no gaps between the ends of each log).
Coir logs are available in 1.5m x 200mm lengths, as well as 3m x 200mm, and 3m x 300mm. They have pre-drilled holes for easy peg installation and can be quickly set up once the channels have been dug.
